Henry Ford’s Quadricycle

Inventor Henry F. Ford first made his car, the Quadricycle, in 1896. While working as the Chief Engineer for Thomas Edison’s company, Ford had 24 hours a day to experiment with a gas-powered vehicle. In his workshop, Ford created a prototype and tested it out, resulting in a vehicle with two forward speeds and no reverse. The car was so successful that Ford made a million of them, and a few hundred thousand were sold for $200 each.

Henry Ford’s passion for cars began early in life. While working as a chief engineer for the Edison illuminating company, Ford had many free hours to experiment with gasoline engines. He saw a steam-powered vehicle chugging down the road and became obsessed with the possibility of a gasoline engine.
